Day 1: Settle In and Explore Lagos
If you decide to have Lagos as your base, you’ll immediately be charmed by its cobbled streets, historic walls, and vibrant atmosphere. Spend your first day getting acquainted with the town.
Lagos Old Town
Start by strolling through the Old Town, where you’ll find narrow, pedestrian-friendly streets lined with whitewashed buildings, quaint shops, and lively cafes. Visit the Lagos Fortress to learn about the town’s maritime history, and take in the beautiful views of the harbor. Don’t forget to stop by the Igreja de Santo António, a beautiful baroque church with intricate golden altars.
Praia Dona Ana & Praia do Camilo
After exploring the sights, make your way to Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo, two of the most beautiful beaches near Lagos. Praia Dona Ana, in particular, is perfect for families.
Known for its crystal-clear waters, golden cliffs, and stunning natural beauty, these beaches offer a relaxing escape. Spend the afternoon swimming, sunbathing, and soaking in the views. We loved our day at Praia Dona Ana, especially with the well-maintained facilities, showers, and calm waters, ideal for a laid-back family beach day.
Day 2: Discover Ponta de Piedade and Lagos’ Coastal Wonders
Ponta de Piedade
Start your second day with a trip to Ponta de Piedade, a series of dramatic limestone cliffs just a short drive from Lagos. The area is famous for its unique rock formations and hidden caves and is absolutely stunning.
The best way to explore is by boat, so consider booking a family-friendly boat tour that will take you along the coast and into sea caves. Alternatively, you can enjoy a scenic walk along the cliffs.
Lagos Marina
After exploring the cliffs, head to the Lagos Marina for lunch. The marina is home to a variety of cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood with views of the water. Afterward, take a relaxing boat ride or simply explore the shops around the marina.
Return to Praia Dona Ana

Return to Lagos

Day 4: Zoomarine Theme Park and Nature Reserve Adventure

Located about 40 minutes from Lagos, Zoomarine is a must for families with young kids. The park combines entertainment with education, featuring dolphin shows, an aquarium, 4D cinemas, and fun amusement rides. The highlight for many families is the opportunity to swim with dolphins, an unforgettable experience for both children and adults alike.
Lagoa dos Salgados Nature Reserve

Carvoeiro Boardwalk & Algar Seco
In the afternoon, take a stroll along the Carvoeiro Boardwalk, which offers stunning views of the coastline. The boardwalk leads to Algar Seco, a collection of fascinating limestone formations, caves, and grottoes. You can explore the area on foot or book a boat tour to see the caves from the sea.
Benagil Caves
While in Carvoeiro, you can book a Benagil Caves boat tour directly from Carvoeiro’s marina. The boat tour takes you through stunning sea caves, including the famous Benagil Cave with its roof hole letting sunlight pour in. This is one of the Algarve’s most iconic attractions and is a thrilling experience for the whole family.
Praia da Marinha

Day 7: A Relaxing Day at Albufeira
Praia do Ancão
For your final day, take a short drive to Praia do Ancão, a quieter beach near Albufeira, about 25 minutes from Lagos. This is the perfect spot for a low-key day of sunbathing, swimming, and relaxing by the sea. The beach has calm waters, making it ideal for families with younger children.
Albufeira Old Town

For a more upscale vibe, Vilamoura offers luxury accommodations and marina views. No matter where you stay you’ll have easy access to outdoor adventures, local dining, and family-oriented attractions, ensuring a wonderful Algarve getaway.
HOW TO GET AROUND THE ALGARVE
Public transportation in the Algarve is available but somewhat limited, so renting a car is the best way to explore the region’s towns and villages.
Many of the most scenic and remote spots can only be reached by car, and having your own vehicle gives you the flexibility and convenience to explore at your own pace.
Renting a car from Faro Airport is easy—just bring your driver’s license and passport. We did this and appreciated the freedom to go wherever we wanted, whenever we wanted.
Be sure to book your car in advance during peak seasons and familiarize yourself with the toll roads in the area to ensure a smooth trip.
