Ponta Da Piedade: What You Need To Know For A Visit

When it comes to things to see in the Algarve, Ponta da Piedade is one of the best. It’s a spectacular site that will leave a lasting impression on you. So if you’re thinking of making the trip, there are a few things to know about Ponta da Piedade.

THE AWESOME VIEWS

The Algarve is full of captivating scenery and views, but Ponta da Piedade is among the most captivating. The gorgeous yellow-orange rocks that the cliffs are made of are jagged and impressive.

At Ponta da Piedade you get the opportunity to get a close-up view of these wondrous formations. And even better you get to see them meet up with the equally gorgeous turquoise-blue water of the Atlantic Ocean.

From the moment that you arrive at the location, you’ll be mesmerized by the openness of the cliffs as they head off to the ocean. From on top of the cliffs, you get a panoramic expansive view of the ocean, the cliffs, and the surrounding area.

To get a closer view there is a stone staircase that descends to sea level. Follow the staircase down and you’ll arrive at a cove that is partially surrounded by rock formations that give you an enclosed feel and bring you down right to the ocean.

Of particular interest is an opening in the rock that is used to board boats. This little tunnel is a cool feature not to be missed even if you aren’t boarding a boat.

PARKING

Parking is free but limited. The best spot is a small area near the little cafe. It’s strictly first come first served with no real organization beyond what drivers come up with. It pays to come early because the spots are very limited.

When we visited in June of 2023 a bit further up the road there was a spot that was cleared out where some people were also able to park. The spot was much bigger but a bit of a walk down to Ponta da Piedade.

The area was more underdeveloped than I would have imagined for such a prominent spot to visit. It’s quite barren but the good thing is that it still seems to hold its naturalness and ruggedness.

FACILITIES

There is a nice little restaurant not too far from the staircase down to Ponta da Piedade. It serves snacks, small food items, and other necessities such as water. It was a great spot to relax and rehydrate because the area is very open and there is no shade.

It’s always helpful to bring a backpack to bring what you need, but it’s always nice to have somewhere close in case you get hungry or need more water. Also, the prices were reasonable.

BOARDWALK

While Ponta da Piedade is the main attraction in this area, several other notable spots are worth a visit. There is a boardwalk that continues down the coast and connects with lookout points and beaches.

The closest beach is the stunning Praia do Camilo. Even though it is only accessible by a steep staircase, it’s worth the effort to reach. The small beach area is sensational in its beauty.

BOAT TOURS

Not only is Ponta da Piedade a wonderful site to visit, but the surrounding area is also discoverable by boat. Several boat tours are available that will give you a unique view of the area.

Benagil Caves is the most popular of the caves in the region, but it’s not the only one. The entire Algarve region is full of numerous caves and grottoes just waiting to be explored, so once you’ve seen enough on land, take to the water to complete your trip!

BEST TIME TO VISIT PONTA DA PIEDADE

Almost any time of the year is a great time to visit Ponta da Piedade. That said, July and August would likely be a bit too warm for a visit.

We were able to visit in June during the morning and there weren’t many people there so I didn’t have to worry about overcrowding. The landing at the bottom of the staircase isn’t very big and there are no railings as a barrier to the ocean, so it wouldn’t take a lot for it to be overcrowded.

I didn’t have to get there super early, I was there just before 10 am and it was nice and quiet.

TIPS FOR FAMILIES VISITING

There’s quite a bit of steps to reach the bottom and as you can imagine the trip back up is a workout, so it’s not convenient for little ones. There are a couple of landings where you can stop and rest but it’s a hike!

With no cover from the sun, make sure to bring hats when visiting in the summer. The sun was strong when I was there at 10 am in June so if you’re visiting over the summer be prepared.

This is especially true if you don’t get a parking spot near the staircase, the walk down to Ponta Piedade is out in the open and about 10 to 15 minutes with no trees and the sun can be strong.

Once you reach the bottom, there are no railings, just a small landing that drops off right into the ocean so you’ll have to be very careful.

There are no railings in general in the area so be careful near any cliffs.

HOW TO GET TO PONTA DA PIEDADE

Ponte da Piedade is conveniently located just outside of the town of Lagos. This makes it an easy 10-minute drive from the center of town. Unfortunately, the site is far enough out that there are no buses that directly take you out to the site.

ENJOY YOUR VISIT TO PONTA DA PIEDADE

Make sure to add Ponta da Piedade to your itinerary on your trip to the Algarve. The entire Algarve region is spectacular but this is a must see. While you’re near Lagos and spending time at Ponta da Piedade, combining it with some time at the beach is an excellent idea.
