WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT THE ALGARVE?

June is the best time to visit the Algarve with your family. For families with children, the available travel schedule can be limited, but June combines the best of what the Algarve offers.

The weather is wonderful, it’s not yet overcrowded, events are going on, it’s the perfect time to enjoy nature, and the costs are reasonable.

There is no bad time to visit the Algarve, and every season has its benefits, but for what most people come to the Algarve for, which is the sun, nature, and the beaches, it’s hard to beat June.

THE WEATHER IS PERFECT FOR THE BEACH

Albufeira coast

June is the beginning of summer weather, and you can begin to feel its effects. This is especially true in the Algarve where the days seem to be perpetually long and sunny.

The average high temperatures typically range from 77F to 82F, which is maintained in part by refreshing breezes coming off of the Atlantic Ocean.

While the air temperature is warm, the Atlantic Ocean will be cooler than you expect. It wasn’t cool enough to ruin our family’s trips to the beaches in the Algarve, but it’s worth noting.

Once you’re in the water and enjoying yourself, you’ll get used to it quickly enough. It also helped that both of our days were warm, but only one was sunny and we still had fun in the water.

Those beaches along the Algarve Coast are breathtaking. The best of the bunch is Praia da Marinha with its extraordinary landscape, golden sand, and turquoise water. You’ll also want to check out Meia Praia and Praia Dona Ana.

IT’S NOT YET OVERCROWDED

For an area with spectacular beaches, it stands to reason that its busiest season is summer. July and August being the most popular months to visit.

June is a great time to get the jump on everyone and arrive before the crowds. While many U.S. schools are out in June, most schools in Europe don’t let out until later. Traveling in June will help you to avoid that added crowd.

This means that the beaches and other attractions are less crowded when you’re there.

Families can enjoy other popular attractions such as Zoomarine, Slide & Splash water park as well as the numerous towns and villages that dot the coast. You’ll be able to walk the streets and experience the culture of the Algarve without it being overcrowded.

THERE’S LOT OF EVENTS IN SUMMER

June in the Algarve means that there are numerous festivals and events planned. This includes street parties and performances.

This is also the beginning of the summer concert season, so you’ll be able to enjoy concerts in one of the outdoor venues. These performances can cover a wide range of musical genres, so check to see who’s performing.

IT’S A GREAT TIME TO ENJOY NATURE

With the perfect temperatures and longer days, this is the ideal time of year to experience outdoor adventures and the natural beauty of the Algarve. Besides the abundance of beaches, there are plenty of hiking trails, cliffs, and caves to explore.

Carvoeiro Boardwalk

If you want to be a bit more active you can rent a bike and discover the Algarve via its bike trails.

A boat tour is a great way to see the Algarve including its famous Benagil Caves. Our family loved our boat tour, which was about 90 minutes. We left Carvoeiro and explored the coast with its many caves and grottoes for a truly memorable experience.

There are plenty of boat tours available from larger companies to local tours. You can book yours here.

If you want to get a bit more up close and personal, there are ways to explore Benagil Cave by renting kayaks.

Other great natural points to explore include Ponta da Piedade, Sagres, and Algar Seco.

BETTER SELECTION OF FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATIONS

With smaller crowds comes a better selection and lower prices when it comes to accommodations. Since most European families have yet to start their summer vacation, June is just before things get really busy in the Algarve.

Several amazing towns are great for families to stay in. We chose to stay in Lagos. It was a great mix of history, culture, and location.

There is a lot to choose from including beachfront resorts, villas, and apartments. There are plenty of hotels and resorts that are family friendly so you shouldn’t have a hard time finding something that you like.
