Begin your Madrid adventure with a visit to the Apollo and Neptune Fountains. While each fountain is captivating, it’s the surrounding green spaces in the heart of Madrid that truly steal the spotlight.
In the northern section, you’ll find the Apollo Fountain alongside a delightful playground for children, and tree-lined paths, perfect for a stroll.
The southern section features a tourist information center and similar tree-covered walkways, where, to my surprise, I spotted wild parrots. Keep an eye out, and you might catch a glimpse of these vibrant birds in the wild.
Chocolateria San Gines
Next, indulge your sweet tooth at ChocolaterÃa San Ginés, renowned for its world-famous churros.
Expect a line, as this popular spot attracts many tourists, but the delightful experience of dipping crispy churros into rich, thick chocolate is well worth the wait.
If the line is too long, make sure to enjoy churros elsewhere in Madrid before you leave the city.
Plaza Mayor
Visit Plaza Mayor, historically the heart of Madrid. This distinctive square, featuring geometrically designed buildings such as Casa de la PanaderÃa, offers a captivating architectural experience with roots in the 17th century.
Capture the moment, relax with a coffee, and watch the lively mix of locals and tourists.
Mercado de San Miguel
Continue your day at Mercado de San Miguel, Madrid’s charming and picturesque market. Although other markets might be better for shopping, none can match the popularity and allure of San Miguel.
Savor a variety of Spanish delicacies, from Iberico ham and seafood paella to Spanish cheese and croquetas. We sampled several incredible foods here, including salmon tapas, Iberico ham, and churros. This was one of our favorite stops in Madrid.
Royal Palace of Madrid
The Royal Palace of Madrid is the largest functioning palace in Europe. Secure your tickets in advance for a comprehensive tour, which includes the throne room and many historic chambers.
Various other options are available, including guided tours of the Palace that can be reserved here.
Before touring the palace, stroll around the expansive open-air courtyard. This impressive space serves as a great introduction to the palace.
After your tour, visit the nearby Plaza de Oriente, a charming park just across from the palace, which features gardens and a delightful playground for children.
Sabatini Gardens
End your day at the Sabatini Gardens, a meticulously landscaped gem next to the palace. Immerse yourself in the blend of French and English styles, stroll along pathways lined with shrubs, and enjoy the tranquility of this green oasis.
DAY TWO
Cybele Palace
Admire the architectural marvel of Cybele Palace, designed in the neoclassical style by Spanish architect Antonio Palacios. Take the elevator to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the city.
Cibeles Fountain
Marvel at the Cibeles Fountain just outside Cybele Palace. Inaugurated in 1782, this iconic fountain has become a symbol of Madrid. This is a great place to capture stunning photos with the majestic Cybele Palace as your backdrop.
Metropolis Building
Discover the Metropolis Building on Calle Gran Via, an iconic structure constructed between 1907 and 1911, blending Beaux-Arts and French neoclassical styles, crowned by the Winged Victory statue.
For a bird’s-eye view, head to the nearby Circulo de Bellas Artes building.
Calle Gran Via
After you see the Metropolis Building, make your way down the Calle Gran Via to enjoy a bit of retail therapy on the main boulevard as well as its side streets.
This area is a shopper’s paradise featuring both national and international brands. Whether you’re looking for luxury or budget items, this area has it all. Enjoy the stunning architecture of Madrid as you shop.
Fundacion Telefonica
While on Calle Gran Via take a moment to explore Fundacion Telefonica, where you’ll find floors filled with technological displays, art, and multimedia installations.
It’s a free and captivating escape from the bustling Calle Gran Via. Engage with interactive exhibits and in unique technological experiences.
Our family found the exhibits and installations to be fascinating. Its a fun way to learn for anyone who has an interest in science or technology.
Puerta del Sol
Experience the vibrant atmosphere of Puerta del Sol, one of Madrid’s busiest squares, renowned as “kilometer zero.” Shop, dine, and explore, as it’s conveniently situated near Calle Gran Via and hosts one of the city’s largest metro stations.
Plaza de Espana
Head to Plaza de España via the metro from Puerta del Sol. Upon reaching the plaza, you’ll encounter a prominent monument at its center and, notably, a nice little playground at the far end.
Take a moment to relax and enjoy the surroundings while the kids have fun on the playground.
Templo de Debod
Discover the unexpected wonder of the Templo de Debod, an authentic Egyptian temple set in the heart of Madrid. Originally built in Egypt, this temple was carefully dismantled and reconstructed in Madrid during the 1970s.
Explore its rich history, step inside (with limited entry slots), and then wander through the surrounding park to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views as well as a playground.
DAY THREE
Prado Museum
Take in the impressive collection of artwork at the Prado Museum, a key component of Madrid’s Golden Triangle. Admire classical European masterpieces, featuring works by celebrated Spanish artists like Francisco Goya, Diego Velázquez, and El Greco.
