From the iconic landmarks, and amazing culture to the fun activities, this itinerary will provide you the essential tips that you need to plan out your time in Rome. DAY ONE

Borghese Gardens 

Start your day at one of Rome’s charming green spaces. Whether biking or hiking, there’s a lot to explore. Don’t miss the pond for rowing fun, and kids will love the playground areas.

Borghese Gallery 

Tucked away in Borghese Gardens is one of Rome’s top cultural gems. Established in 1633 to display the Borghese family’s art collection, it’s now a prestigious museum. With masterpieces by Bernini and Caravaggio, it’s a must-see for art lovers.

Pincio Terrace

Once you’ve finished exploring the museum, head west through the park to find Pincio Terrace, one of Rome’s most awe-inspiring viewpoints. Situated on a city hill, this terrace provides panoramic views of Rome’s skyline. Follow the stairs down to a delightful square…

Piazza del Popolo 

In this lively square, an ancient Roman gate stands at the north, while the Basilica di Santa Maria in Montesanto and Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Miracoli adorn the south.

It’s a testament to Rome’s rich history and architecture. Heading south, three main streets await. Take Via del Corso to Via dei Condotti for the most scenic route, ensuring the best view as you continue towards the Spanish Steps.

Via del Corso

On the way to the famous steps lies the shopping district right in the heart of historic Rome. Via del Corso along with the streets that run off of it are filled with a variety of shops which include international brands and local boutiques. You’ll also find a lot of luxury stores in this area.

Spanish Steps 

A short walk from Piazza del Popolo takes you to Rome’s famous Spanish Steps, an iconic global attraction. Though sitting on them is not allowed, their charm is undeniable, enhanced by one of the best piazzas and fountains in Rome, Piazza di Spagna and the Barcaccia Fountain.

Climbing to the top offers a stunning view of the square below.

DAY TWO

Colosseum 

As one of Rome’s most iconic sites, the Colosseum attracts large crowds, emphasizing the need to book tickets in advance. Skipping long lines benefits everyone, especially kids!

Once inside, prepare for a captivating journey with your family through the Colosseum’s ancient halls and corridors. With much of its structure intact, exploring offers an awe-inspiring experience. 

Our whole family loved exploring the main arena as well as the staircases and corridors. It’s an awesome thing to see in person. It’s best to start early so that you’ll have plenty of time and beat the heat.

Palatine Hill/Roman Forum 

Close to the Colosseum, you’ll discover Palatine Hill and the nearby Roman Forum, offering a great opportunity to explore Rome’s ancient history. 

Consider a combined ticket or one with an audio guide for Palatine Hill due to limited signage. 

You can deepen your understanding of these historic landmarks with an audio guide or guided tour.

Vittorio Emanuele II Monument

It was astonishing how this monument dominated Rome’s skyline from every angle. Its immense size and brilliant white façade ensure it’s impossible to overlook.

At its summit, a terrace provides an awe-inspiring view of the city below. Your next stop awaits just across the street.

Mercati di Traiano Museo dei Fori Imperiali  

This location stands out for its impressive collection of ancient artifacts, providing a window into the daily lives of ancient Romans. Set within Trajan’s Market ruins, these exhibits offer captivating insights into the customs and activities of ancient civilizations.

DAY THREE

Baths of Caracalla 

The Baths of Caracalla offers a unique opportunity to delve into various aspects of ancient Roman life. As a center for socializing, exercise, and leisure, it stands as a testament to the city’s dynamic history.

Its vastness continues to impress, showcasing unmatched architectural prowess. Comfortable footwear is recommended due to its size. Renowned for its impeccable preservation, it’s a treasure trove of historical wonders.

After exploring, head to Circus Maximus and catch a bus to Trastevere. Opt for Ponte Sisto or Ponte Garibaldi for convenience. Enjoy scenic views of the Tiber River and perhaps glimpse St. Peter’s Basilica’s iconic dome along the way.

Trastevere  

This neighborhood holds a special place in Rome’s heart, enchanting visitors with its charm. Perfect for a stroll, it offers family-friendly attractions like the playground at Piazza di San Cosimato. This was a hit with our kids and we were able to sit down, relax and enjoy the surroundings.

As evening approaches, the area retains its lively atmosphere while remaining welcoming to families. Relax at a cozy cafe or gelateria, taking in the vibrant ambiance. Don’t forget to visit Basilica di Santa Maria and its bustling square, central to the neighborhood’s activity.

This is also one of the best neighborhoods to stay in when visiting Rome.

For an adventure, hike up Janiculum Hill for breathtaking panoramic views. Explore Villa Doria Pamphili for captivating landscapes and tranquil surroundings.

Food tour 

Going on a food tour with a knowledgeable guide is a great way to find out the best of what Rome has to offer when it comes to food. Experience traditional dishes that Rome is known for.

Find some hidden gems that you may not have found otherwise. A food tour will provide info on Italian culinary traditions giving you a greater appreciation for all of the amazing.

DAY FOUR

Campo de Fiori 

Savor the lively ambiance of this bustling market. Known for its local delicacies, colorful flowers, and diverse goods, it’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in the city’s spirit.

Arrive early to make the most of your visit, as the market closes in the early afternoon. Whether you’re after tasty treats or one-of-a-kind souvenirs, this vibrant market ensures a memorable and enriching experience.

Jewish Quarter 

After your market adventure, delve into the Jewish Quarter, a district brimming with history and cultural depth. Like the rest of Rome, wandering its narrow streets promises a captivating experience.

Enjoy authentic Jewish-Italian cuisine amidst the lively atmosphere of this vibrant neighborhood. With its array of shops and energetic ambiance, the Jewish Quarter beckons you to explore its charm and heritage at every corner.

Vatican City 

Stroll down Via Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, then cross the Vittorio Emanuele Bridge spanning the Tiber River, leading you to Vatican City. Once inside, you’ll encounter a realm adorned with some of the world’s most renowned artworks.

Before even entering any buildings, the grandeur of St. Peter’s Square enchants with its artistic allure. The Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica are the main attractions.

Entry to St. Peter’s Basilica is free, but for a more immersive experience, consider a guided tour for insightful commentary and deeper understanding.

Castel Sant’Angelo 

Leaving Vatican City via the main exit, Via della Conciliazione, you’ll reach Castel Sant’Angelo. This fortress is steeped in Roman history, offering a mesmerizing journey through the ages. Initially built by Emperor Hadrian as a grand mausoleum, the castle has witnessed numerous transformations.

Don’t miss the chance to visit the rooftop terrace, boasting a breathtaking panorama of Vatican City and Rome. While perhaps less renowned than other landmarks in Rome, it was a highlight for our family.

Our kids loved exploring its halls, passageways, and rooms, feeling like time travelers on a thrilling adventure!

DAY FIVE

Capitoline Museums

These museums, housed in the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Palazzo Nuovo hold an amazing collection of artistic treasures including sculptures, paintings, and other historic pieces.

Some items give a peek into ancient Roman life such as pottery and coins. You’ll have the opportunity to admire Michaelangelo’s spectacular work and design included in the buildings as well as the piazza where they’re located.

Piazza del Campidoglio

This piazza provides an excellent example of Michaelangelo’s remarkable eye for design and architecture, with this being one of his most celebrated designs. As you take in the architectural beauty, you can also enjoy panoramic views of Rome’s landmarks since the piazza is located on Capitoline Hill.

Pizza/Pasta making class

Taking a pizza or pasta-making class is an excellent way to fully experience Italian tradition. It’s a fun and interactive activity for families with kids and a great way to learn about the local culture. As a bonus, once you’re done you’ll have some delicious results to sample!

Piazza Navona

In this sprawling square, you’ll discover not one, but three magnificent fountains. Each fountain showcases exquisite design and intricate details, mesmerizing visitors with its beauty.

The atmosphere in this expansive, oval-shaped plaza is truly extraordinary, complemented by the majestic architecture surrounding it, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all who wander through.

Pantheon

Constructed around 1600 years ago, this impressive engineering marvel still stands today, open to visitors at minimal cost. Marvel at the Pantheon’s breathtaking architecture, as well as the charming piazza and fountain.

While inside, don’t forget to capture a selfie directly beneath its iconic Oculus. Also, take a moment to appreciate the immense size of the grand entrance doors. I found it to be one of the most impressive parts of the building.

Trevi Fountain

Wander through the winding streets and narrow alleys to reach Rome’s beloved Trevi Fountain, a masterpiece of Baroque artistry located in Piazza di Trevi.

This iconic landmark is a must-see, best experienced both during the early morning hours (the best time to take some pics) and the night. Among Rome’s countless wonders, the Trevi Fountain remains one of my perennial favorites.
