GETTING TO THE ALGARVE
The primary modes of transportation to reach the Algarve are by car or by flying into Faro, which are likely your best options. Given the amount of amazing things to do in the Algarve, renting a car is highly recommended for flexibility.
It also helps to have a plan ahead of time after you review your options so that you can reach your accommodations stress-free.
VISITING FROM LISBON/NORTH PORTUGAL
To reach the Algarve from Lisbon or northern Portugal, renting a car is likely the optimal choice. The approximately 3-hour drive from Lisbon is straightforward and mostly a straight shot via the A2, making it an easy and pleasant journey.
The A2 connects Lisbon to the Algarve, and within the region, the A22 facilitates east/west travel, linking you to the various towns you’ll want to explore. Our drive from Lagos to Lisbon along the A22 and A2 was smooth, with no challenging terrain and convenient rest areas along the way.
Renting a car in Portugal is a simple process, requiring only your driver’s license, passport, and rental information.

Bus
For those who prefer bus travel, there are several options available to take you to the Algarve. Ticket prices vary depending on your departure location and the timing of your purchase.
Rede Expressos and Flixbus are the two main carriers, providing a cost-effective alternative if you don’t want to worry about directions or renting a car.
Booking bus tickets in advance ensures a smooth and budget-friendly journey. You can purchase your tickets here.
Train
While trains offer an alternative, there are no direct connections from Lisbon to the Algarve. Trains depart from Entrecampos Station with a stopover in Tunes and a transfer to a regional train for the remaining journey.
Although slightly more expensive than buses, trains are another great option, especially if you’re not driving.

FROM AIRPORT/FARO:
When visiting the Algarve region, Faro International Airport (FAO) serves as the main gateway. Renting a car is likely the best option for convenient exploration, with several rental agencies operating at Faro Airport.
We chose Sixt for our trip, rented a car from the airport, and enjoyed the freedom it provided. Renting a car from the airport is a simple process, similar to renting in the States. Taxis and airport shuttles are alternative transportation options, each with its considerations and costs.
If Not Renting a Car
Taxi: Taking a taxi is a great option if you prefer not to rent a car. Taxis are available just outside the arrivals area but keep in mind that they can be quite expensive, especially if your destination is up to an hour away from the airport. Confirm the fare before leaving.
Airport Shuttle: If you’re staying at a resort or popular hotel, check if they offer an airport shuttle service. This can be a stress-free way to reach your destination. Book your transportation ahead of time for a shared ride that can be more cost-effective than a taxi or private car.
Bus: Public transportation is another option to consider. Taking the bus (EVA Transportes #16) requires going to the city of Faro first, and from there, you can connect to a regional bus to reach your exact destination.
Train: If you opt for the train, you’ll need to make your way to the Faro city center to reach the train station. Once there, you can take the train to your desired destination.
