Nestled within the expanse of Borghese Gardens lies one of Rome’s premier cultural institutions. Originally constructed in 1633 to showcase the esteemed art collection of the Borghese family, the Borghese Gallery has since evolved into a renowned museum.
Boasting a diverse array of masterpieces, including works by esteemed artists like Bernini and Caravaggio, the gallery offers a captivating journey through Italy’s artistic heritage. It’s advisable to buy tickets in advance to ensure availability and avoid potential queues.
Pincio Terrace
After concluding your visit to the museum, venture westward through the park to discover one of Rome’s most breathtaking vantage points. Perched atop one of the city’s seven hills, this terrace offers an expansive panorama of Rome’s stunning skyline.

A brief stroll from Piazza del Popolo will lead you to Rome’s renowned Spanish Steps, an iconic landmark revered worldwide. Though sitting on the steps is prohibited, their allure remains undiminished, complemented by the ambiance of Piazza di Spagna and the Barcaccia Fountain.
Hiking to the top of the steps affords a breathtaking vista of the piazza below.
Trevi Fountain
Navigate through the labyrinthine streets and alleyways to reach Rome’s beloved Trevi Fountain, a masterpiece of Baroque artistry situated in the Piazza di Trevi.
This iconic landmark is worth at least two visits – once during the early morning hours, and again at night. Of all of the amazing things to see in Rome, this is always one of my favorite spots.
Pantheon
Erected approximately 2,000 years ago, this remarkable feat of engineering endures to this day and welcome to all. Admire not only the Pantheon’s awe-inspiring architecture but also the splendid piazza and fountain.
While exploring the Pantheon, make sure that you take a selfie directly beneath its iconic Oculus. Additionally, take note of the immense size of the grand doors at the entrance of the Pantheon.

Piazza Navona
Within this expansive piazza, you’ll encounter not just one, but three extraordinary fountains. Each fountain boasts impeccable design and intricate detailing, captivating visitors with its splendor.
The atmosphere within this vast, oval-shaped square is truly remarkable, enhanced by the majestic architecture that envelops the area, creating an unforgettable experience for all who visit.
DAY TWO
Colosseum
As one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks, the Colosseum draws throngs of visitors, which makes it all the more important to secure your tickets in advance to bypass lengthy queues. Everyone benefits from not standing in long lines, especially kids!
Upon entering, prepare to be captivated by an unforgettable journey through the hallowed halls and corridors of this ancient amphitheater. With much of the Colosseum’s structure still intact, exploring its storied grounds offers a truly awe-inspiring encounter.

We were astounded that no matter where you were in Rome, it seemed that you could see this monument. Its sheer magnitude and striking white exterior make it an unmissable landmark.
At the top of the monument, there is a terrace that offers a breathtaking panorama of the cityscape. Positioned just across the street lies your next destination.
Mercati di Traiano Museo dei Fori Imperiali
The site is notable for its remarkable assortment of ancient artifacts, showcasing a glimpse into the daily life of ancient Romans. Housed within the ruins of Trajan’s Market, these exhibits offer a fascinating insight into the customs and activities of ancient civilizations.
DAY THREE
Campo de Fiori
Take the time to relish in the vibrant atmosphere of this bustling marketplace. Renowned for its array of local delicacies, vibrant blooms, and assorted goods, it presents an ideal locale for indulging in the essence of the city.
Arriving early is best, as Campo de’ Fiori typically closes in the early afternoon, making the morning hours the best time to explore. Whether seeking edible delights or unique souvenirs, this lively market promises a memorable and enriching experience.
Jewish Quarter
After exploring the market, venture into the Jewish Quarter, a district steeped in rich history and cultural significance.
Much like the rest of Rome, navigating through its narrow alleyways offers a delightful journey. Indulge in the authentic flavors of Jewish-Italian cuisine while immersing yourself in the vibrant ambiance of this energetic neighborhood.
Adorned with an array of shops and renowned for its lively atmosphere, the Jewish Quarter invites you to discover its charm and heritage at every turn.
Vatican City
Take a stroll along Via Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, then cross the Vittorio Emanuele Bridge which spans the Tiber River, leading you to the sovereign city-state of Vatican City.
Crossing into its confines, you’ll find yourself in a place adorned with some of the world’s most renowned artworks. Even before stepping foot inside any buildings, the grandeur of St. Peter’s Square captivates with its artistic allure.

Originally commissioned by Emperor Hadrian as a grand mausoleum, the castle has undergone numerous transformations over the years.
Its walls whisper tales of intrigue and resilience, inviting exploration into the depths of its storied past.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the rooftop terrace, where you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of Vatican City and Rome. Though perhaps not as widely celebrated as other landmarks, this was a big hit with our family.

DAY FOUR
Baths of Caracalla
This destination offers a distinctive opportunity to immerse yourself in various facets of ancient Roman life. Serving as a hub for social gatherings, exercise, and leisure activities, this expansive site stands as a testament to the city’s vibrant past. Its sheer magnitude continues to astound visitors, showcasing architectural prowess that remains unparalleled.
Given its vast expanse, comfortable footwear is advisable because it is a massive site. Renowned as one of the most impeccably preserved bath complexes of antiquity, it boasts a wealth of historical marvels awaiting exploration.

After concluding your exploration, consider venturing towards the Circus Maximus and catching a bus across the river to the Trastevere neighborhood. While several routes are available, opting for either the Ponte Sisto or Ponte Garibaldi bus stop provides a convenient starting point for your journey into Trastevere.
On the way, enjoy picturesque vistas of the Tiber River and you may even be able to catch a glimpse of the iconic dome of St. Peter’s Basilica.
Trastevere
This neighborhood ranks among the most charming areas in Rome, capturing the hearts of nearly all who visit. It’s often hailed as the top choice for a leisurely afternoon stroll, boasting attractions that cater to families, such as the playground within Piazza di San Cosimato.

Be sure not to miss the Basilica di Santa Maria and its bustling piazza, which serve as focal points of activity in the area. For those seeking a bit of adventure, consider going on a hike up Janiculum Hill to witness one of the most breathtaking panoramic vistas that Rome has to offer.

HOW TO GET AROUND ROME
Getting around Rome is both convenient and part of the adventure. The city’s public transportation system includes buses, trams, and the metro, which connect most major attractions.
For quick and efficient travel, the metro is ideal, especially for reaching landmarks like the Colosseum and Vatican City. Buses and trams offer scenic routes through the city but can be slower due to traffic.
Walking is the best way to explore Rome’s historic center, with its narrow streets and hidden piazzas. So when you’re planning your trip, be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to walk and explore. Taxis and rideshares are available but can be pricey. Consider purchasing a Roma Pass for unlimited public transport access.
