Travel duration – The trip from Rome to Pompeei is about 2 hours each way depending on how you choose to travel. Even with this commute time, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the vast ruins at the site and enjoy the fascinating history.
Transportation – Various transportation options connect Rome to Pompeii. Opt for the efficient high-speed train departing from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, followed by a local train to Pompeii. Having experienced both, we vouch for their cleanliness and ease of use. Exercise caution for pickpockets on the Naples-Pompeii train.Â
Alternatively, for a hassle-free experience, consider booking a guided tour of Pompeii. This option not only includes transportation but also offers knowledgeable guides, ensuring a stress-free and enriching exploration.
Expected Costs – The ticket prices from Rome to Naples via the high speed train is usually around 15 to 30 euros depending on the train that you take. The local train from Naples to Pompeii is usually about 3 to 10 euros.
Guided tours cost quite a bit more but you’re paying tor convenience and a more detailed experience. Costs can be between 80 and 250 euros per person.

EXPLORING POMPEII
Once you reach Pompeii, the immense expanse of the site becomes evident as you explore. It’s a place where a whole day may not suffice to see everything. Walking through its streets feels like a journey through time, transporting you to the past.
Pompeii’s charm lies in the ability to wander and discover different facets of the city. The well-preserved structures, roads, and walls fascinated our family, offering a glimpse into the historical architecture and layout.
Pompeii Archaeological Park
This massive park is the heart of Pompeii as it preserves the ruins of the homes, temples and public spaces that made up this ancient city. Allow yourself to wander the spaces of this open air museum and imagine the daily life of the city.
If you’re coming in the summer months, be sure to bring hats, sunglasses and plenty of water. The site is completely open and exposed with very little shade.
The Forum
The Forum was the busy center of the city and the home of social, political and economic activity. There still stands the ruins of temples, government buildings and markets.
Pompeii’s Amphitheater
This grand arena is where gladiators fought and entertained crowds. This was once a central part of life in Pompeii.
Villa of Mysteries
Explore Roman art and mythology at the Villa of Mysteries. Admire the well preserved frescoes that depict rituals and ceremonies
House of Faun
This building is a prime example of Roman architecture. It’s an amazing experience to explore the grounds of what was an opulent mansion which included intricate mosaics and artwork.
Even though it is currently in ruins, there was enough that remained for us to be impressed with the design and architecture of the site.
FOOD AND ACCOMMODATIONS IN POMPEII
After spending your day exploring the site at Pompeii, you’ll rightly be quite hungry. Fortunately, the surrounding area provides a variety of local restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy authentic Italian food. This is the spot to try pizza, fresh seafood and other regional delicacies.
If you decide to make it more than just a day trip, there are also several accommodations nearby including small bed and breakfasts as well as hotels.
