BOOK FAR IN ADVANCE

Once you start thinking about traveling to Rome, you should start tracking the prices with an eye towards booking as soon as possible. In years past, waiting until the last minute for a deal was a popular option, but it doesn’t really work that way any more.

Your best bet to score an awesome deal is to book as early as possible.

We often start looking for flights up to 10 months in advance. We’ve found that it’s around this time that airlines will offer a promotional rate on certain fares. And when you find one, make sure that you snap it up and don’t look back!

USE COMPARISON SITES

If you want the best deal on a flight to Rome, it’s best to compare what different airlines are offering.

You can save time by using a site like Booking.com which will present fares from several different airlines.

If you have a preference for a certain airline, you can still filter for that to make sure that they’re included in your search. I’ve found that it’s helpful to sort by arrival and departure time and of course by price.

BE FLEXIBLE WITH YOUR TRAVEL DAYS

Since you’re traveling with your family, you’ll likely be restricted to traveling during a certain time. This time is usually based around summer vacation or other times when the kids are out of school.

Summer of course is popular for all families because of this reason, the result is higher demand and higher prices.

Our family has scheduled our trips to Rome in June to prevent some of the downsides that come with traveling in summer. We’ve found tremendous deals and avoided the crowds and the worst of Rome’s summer heat. Traveling to Rome in June has been perfect for us.

Even if you travel in June, you can also potentially save even more money by being flexible with the days and dates that you fly. Changing your travel dates by a day or two can result in significant savings!

MAKE USE OF PRICE ALERTS

When that fabulous discounted fare comes along for Rome, you don’t want to miss it! To be sure that you don’t miss it, set price alerts on Google Flights.

It’s easy to use and set up. It’ll send you an alert to your email when the fare for a selected flight changes. You can have several alerts set up for different dates and locations.

As you use the alerts, also make it a habit to check fares manually because sometimes the best fares come and go before you even get an alert.

FLY OUT OF NEARBY AIRPORTS

If you don’t live close to a major city, chances are you’re missing out on a lot of flight deals. That doesn’t mean that you have to continue missing out.

When looking for flights, include airports that aren’t your home airport even if it’s a couple of hours away.

You may be surprised at what you find and you could save hundreds and maybe even thousands of dollars for a family of four.

Air Transat

We live in Cleveland, but we have family in Toronto, so we fly out of Toronto. On our last trip to Rome, we saved over $3,000 for our family’s flight by flying out of Toronto instead of Cleveland.

Even if the airport is a few hours away and you have to spend the night, if you do the math it may just be worth it for you.

FLY INTO LONDON

Yes, you read that right. Even though London is nowhere near Rome, it’s a major flight hub with way more options for flights. With more selection comes the better chance for a deal.

Once you’re in London, you can then easily book a budget carrier for a roundtrip flight that will take you to Rome and then bring you back for your flight home from London.

Or it may be cheaper to book two one way flights. Either way, there are several high quality inexpensive budget airlines to choose from that will make this plan work for you.

CHECK THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF THE AIRLINE

Comparison sites are a time and money saver when booking flights, but they don’t always have the best deal. Check out the website of the airline that you’re thinking of booking and see what deals they may have.

Sometimes they are able to provide a better price or itinerary than what you’ll find elsewhere.

USE LOYALTY PROGRAMS

If you find an airline that works well for you, sign up for their rewards or loyalty program if they offer them. The more you fly with them the more benefits you get and eventually you may even accumulate enough for a free flight!

Also check out companies that have credit cards specifically for travelers. Companies such as Capital One, Chase Bank and American Express are well known for having excellent cards that provide benefits that you can use towards discounted travel.

VERIFY VISA AND PASSPORT REQUIREMENTS

Passport, boarding pass and laptop

United States citizens can visit Italy for up to 90 days without a visa. Your passport will need at least three months of validity beyond your expected departure date so when checking your passport you’ll want to factor in that extended time.

If you live in any other country, you can check here to find out what the requirements are for your trip to Italy.

Make sure you are sure about the documentation that is needed before you book your flight.
